I am back now

It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of President John Pombe Magufuli. On behalf of all Victoria University Students, I send our deepest condolences to President Magufuli’s family, fellow students, leaders and the people of the United Republic of Tanzania at this difficult time. The world mourns with you and celebrates the extraordinary life of this remarkable leader who devoted his life to peacefully protecting and serving the people of the United Republic of Tanzania.

The work of the Bulldozer stands as a testament to the power of grassroots organizing, proof that one person’s simple idea — that a community should come together to clean and preserve the environment — can make a difference, first in one nation, then in East African Community, and now across Africa. President Magufuli’s tireless efforts earned him not only numerous prestigious awards, but the respect of millions who were inspired by his commitment to conservation, democracy, purging of ghost workers in civil service, prevention of absenteeism in civil service, prevention of corruption, the eradication of poverty, cost-cutting policies, prevention of extravagant expenditure, provision of free education, implementation of the standard gauge railway, control and protection of natural resources. As he told the world, “It’s now time for us to unite and put our ideological differences aside, I will work hard for all Tanzanians regardless of their tribal, religious or ideological affiliations.”

His legacy will stand as an example to all of us to persist in our pursuit of progress.

Kwa masikitiko makubwa nilijifunza juu ya kufariki kwa Rais John Pombe Magufuli. Kwa niaba ya Wanafunzi wote wa Vyuo Vikuu vya Victoria, natuma salamu za pole nyingi kwa familia ya Rais Magufuli, wanafunzi wenzangu, viongozi na watu wa Jamhuri ya Muungano wa Tanzania wakati huu mgumu. Ulimwengu unaomboleza na wewe na unasherehekea maisha ya kushangaza ya kiongozi huyu mashuhuri aliyejitolea maisha yake kulinda kwa amani na kuwatumikia watu wa Jamhuri ya Muungano wa Tanzania.

Kazi ya Bulldozer inasimama kama ushahidi wa nguvu ya kuandaa msingi, ushahidi kwamba wazo rahisi la mtu mmoja - kwamba jamii inapaswa kukusanyika ili kusafisha na kuhifadhi mazingira - linaweza kuleta mabadiliko, kwanza katika taifa moja, kisha katika Afrika Mashariki Jamii, na sasa kote Afrika. Juhudi za Rais Magufuli bila kuchoka hazikumpatia tu tuzo nyingi za kifahari, bali heshima ya mamilioni ambao walitiwa moyo na kujitolea kwake katika uhifadhi, demokrasia, kusafisha wafanyikazi wa roho katika utumishi wa umma, kuzuia utoro katika utumishi wa umma, kuzuia rushwa, kutokomeza umaskini, sera za kupunguza gharama, kuzuia matumizi ya gharama kubwa, utoaji wa elimu bure, utekelezaji wa reli ya kiwango cha wastani, udhibiti na ulinzi wa maliasili.
